Back at it
My New Year’s resolution was to write more. It’s January 16th, and this is the first time I have sat down with my laptop, so that’s going really well.
So I was surprised to find my motivation to finally get started was a soggy, cold long run. I went to bed last night hoping the forecast was somehow wrong and the rain would start sooner/end later/not happen at all. But when I woke up to the sound of rain on the roof, I knew I was going to have to pull on my big girl pants and just get this sh*t done.
Why didn’t I just wait until the rain stopped? Or better yet, just go out to brunch and call it a day? Because I’m a runner and we are – insert your choice word here – dedicated/hardcore/determined/crazy. Maybe it’s a bit of each?
I know I’m fortunate to have a great group to run with every Saturday morning. I’m training again for the Boston Marathon with the Run to End Alzheimer’s team and each week about 20 runners come out for our group run. I usually can be sure to find between 1 and 5 folks that match up by pace, ensuring most, if not all of a 2+ hour run is not done alone.
And today, just like the previous 8 weeks, everyone showed up. No one was especially excited to run as the rain drops landed in the already well-established puddles, but we showed up and we all finished.
I know I couldn’t have done it without Brent, Jason and Claire. The 4 of us completed all 15 miles together, I think all of us recognizing the benefits of running with good company on a bad day.
I also couldn’t have done it without the amazing volunteers and coaches who staffed water stops along the route. I think it is WAY tougher to stand outside in the rain pouring cold water and Gatorade than it is to run in it.
My clothes were so saturated, I was certainly running with an extra several pounds by the end of the run. And my shriveled raison-like toes finally have returned to normal in a pair of warm dry socks.
Yet, I’d have to say this has been my best run of the year. Because I’m a runner and we are crazy.
